Wyvern House – Secondary Special Educational Needs Setting
Mayville’s co-educational alternative provision offers a calm environment for children between the ages of 11-16 with a range of neurodiverse needs including ADHD and ASD, to build confidence and prepare them for the next stage of their educational journey. Wyvern House is a day school only.
Our child-centred approach provides pupils with the care and emotional support they need to flourish. At the heart of this provision is a large multi-disciplinary team, which includes occupational therapists, a speech and language therapist, ELSA and one-to-one learning specialists, such as dyslexia and dyscalculia tutors. However, we aim to take a flexible approach for each child so that we build the right package of support, therefore other needs may be accommodated.
The majority of pupils come to Wyvern with an EHCP, although not all.
Learning experiences are delivered in line with the outcomes on the EHCP. Small group teaching, one-to-one support and partnership with our broader main school resources, ensure that all pupils have the structure and security they need to become the best versions of themselves.

What is Wyvern House?
We understand that the path you have travelled to this point might have been difficult; mainstream schools may not have been a good fit for your child and your relationship with education to date might not always have felt wholly positive. Wyvern aims to provide an access to learning within a context that suits your child’s individual needs. At Wyvern House, we have the skills, facilities and expertise to provide you with an altogether better experience. Our team are dedicated to getting things right for children with SEND or an EHCP.
Working together with families, we gather information and specialist reports, to enable us to make the necessary adjustments for each and every pupil. Mirroring a mainstream core curriculum whilst providing a ‘home from home’ feel, our provision helps to keep anxieties to a minimum and allows pupils to enjoy their journey through secondary education.
Lessons in Wyvern House are carried out, as far as possible, without the noise or interruptions that might disrupt or cause stress to the learner, which may have occurred in a mainstream setting.
Wyvern House can accommodate up to 30 children, not all of these will be working on site as some are remote learners or are on a flexible timetable.

What is Wyvern House like?

Wyvern is located along St Simon’s Road and is part of Mayville High School. The main school sites are located a very short walking distance from the House. Therefore, pupils benefit from accessibility to main school areas such as the library, canteen, recreation space, DT and art studios, computer room and science laboratories.
We are also a short walk from Southsea beach and Canoe Lake!
Within the House, there’s a kitchen where pupils can cook and eat in a communal setting. There’s access to a sensory room and outside space. We have small classrooms suitable for five pupils and additional spaces suitable for one-to-one support.
We are split over two sites, which includes an annex. The annex provides slightly larger classrooms in an Edwardian building. Wyvern House is not a secure site and is situated along a residential road.
Who is Wyvern House for?
Wyvern House can be for any child who enjoys and has a curiosity for learning but who finds a large school setting overwhelming. Not all pupils who attend have an EHCP; some pupils are privately funded.
The majority of pupils are, however, funded by Local Authorities and we work with Hampshire, West Sussex and the Isle of Wight mainly.
With the support of our highly experienced specialist teaching and therapeutic staff and in partnership with parents, pupils are able to overcome their barriers and develop the skills and confidence they need to take the next steps in their lives.
Why choose us?
From the outset, we work with you to ensure that we fully understand your child’s needs, alongside the recommendations on the EHCP or any other specialist reports.
It is our firm belief that the parent-school relationship is as important as the pupil-teacher relationship. Both the school and home environments are vital in enabling your child to thrive.
Success is the shared priority of the parent-school relationship, to deliver the best outcomes for your child, through jointly-agreed strategies and approaches to learning, behaviour and emotional support.
We understand at Wyvern that a pupil needs to feel comfortable at school and may not do so when wearing a uniform. Therefore, pupils are free to wear their own clothes or wear a Mayville uniform.

How is Wyvern delivered?

Pupils will receive an individualised timetable that includes the core subjects of English, maths, science, PSHE and PE. Pupils will also have access to art and drama lessons delivered at Wyvern and in partnership with the main school pupils may have the opportunity to attend lessons in their buildings. Learning can be arranged on a flexible basis including day release to colleges, online learning at home, and use of computer-based learning. Academic learning runs in tandem with access to therapeutic and emotional support from our specialist staff. Wyvern is partnered with the CReSTeD registered Learning Support Unit which contains tutors in Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia, Social Communication and study skills
Wyvern pupils are entered for the qualifications that are most appropriate for them, relative to their ability, personal preferences, interests and aspirations.
The academic package that we provide is always unique to the individual pupil. As Wyvern is part of Mayville, we are a registered examination centre. Within our provision, we are able to offer a range of formal qualifications, including GCSE, iGCSE, RSL and Pearson Edexcel Functional Skills qualifications.
