PSHEE Curriculum

Mayville is a school which believes in the principle of educating the whole child: the head, the hands, the heart. Our ethos is defined by a belief in the talents and potential of every child and a commitment to the development of their abilities, aptitudes and promise, wherever these may lie.

Pre-Prep & Junior School

In the Junior School, the aim of our PSHEE curriculum is to prepare our pupils for adult life, give them the knowledge they need to be able to make informed decisions and to know how and where to access support, if needed. Our aim is to complement and support the pupils’ parents’ role in developing their children’s understanding of relationships.

The PSHEE curriculum is primarily based on the quality assured curriculum and resources of the PSHE Association, although other resources may be used if they are more appropriate for our pupils. The content and resources used are all age appropriate for each year group. PSHEE is taught in a weekly timetables lesson and all lessons, including Relationships and Sex Education lessons (RSE), are taught by class teachers, so that the pupils are in a safe and familiar environment. Relationships Education is taught primarily through the broader PSHEE curriculum, Sex Education is taught through the science curriculum and the PSHEE curriculum and there is also some overlap in the Computing curriculum, in terms of keeping safe online.

Senior School

The PSHEE programme is integral to the development and fulfilment of the potential we nurture. It promotes personal, social, health, economic and emotional education in a way that enables pupils, now and in the future, to: develop in informed, rounded, secure, healthy and balanced ways; to manage their lives effectively, happily and successfully; to thrive as individuals and as members of families and our wider society.

PSHEE is taught weekly in both KS3 and KS4 where the specialist teachers follow the PSHEE curriculum but have the flexibility to respond to the needs of the pupils and to current affairs. The PSHEE programme is further supplemented through presentations and workshops, delivered by external speakers, giving opportunities for more in-depth exploration of topics.

The elements of PSHEE are delivered through the dedicated programme, as well as through other subjects in the curriculum, notably English, drama, biology, religious studies, MFL, geography, history, ICT and PE.

At Mayville, we teach PSHEE under three core strands: Health and Wellbeing; Relationships; and Living in the Wider World. Please refer to the curriculum map below which gives a more detailed overview of the programme.
