Meet our staff
A school is more than its buildings and infrastructure. The character of Mayville is cultivated, in no small part, by the people who work here. We have a team of specialist educators and support staff who are dedicated to ensuring that every child realises their potential.
Pupils spoke very highly of the individual support and encouragement that teachers, learning assistants and the DLEU give them as they develop the skills and confidence to overcome any personal obstacles, and to persevere in pursuing their goals and in making the most of their talents."

Mayville is like a family, where everyone works together, where staff guide pupils to reach their full potential whilst providing a nurturing and personalised learning environment. Staff and pupils have high expectations, are motivated and share a passion for learning.”
I am currently Head of Pre-Prep and a Year 2 (L2) class teacher here at Mayville. I was also a pupil at Mayville from 1990 - 1998. I loved it so much that I came back and some of my teachers have now become my colleagues. I have a lot to thank Mayville for, as the small classes sizes, nurturing environment and the dedication and support of my teachers enabled me to develop my confidence enormously and contributed to my career success.
I graduated from Canterbury University, with a degree in Education. Since then, I have worked in several schools across the country, teaching primary aged children. Near the beginning of my teaching career, I took a short break to travel the world and was lucky to secure teaching positions in Australia and New Zealand. Since returning, I have mostly taught KS1 children, as that is where my passion lies but I have also fulfilled management and leadership positions. In my current role, I am able to teach full-time, which is what I absolutely love to do, as well as have an oversight of my department.
The children are fantastic, so keen and motivated to learn and they make me laugh every day. As far as I am concerned, I have the best job in the world. I go to work looking forward to what the day might bring and I leave work with an enormous sense of satisfaction, knowing that hopefully I have made a difference and helped shape the minds of six year-olds!
Outside of work, my other real passion is fitness. I am very active and love being outdoors. I enjoy running, yoga, the gym and outdoor fitness classes.

Mayville is a special place. I work with visionary and supportive colleagues and the small class sizes allow me to get to know each pupil really well, enabling me to tailor my teaching to their individual needs."
Mrs S Hardcastle, Head of PSHE & English Teacher
I have been at Mayville since 2009, first as the school librarian and now as an English teacher in the Senior School. In addition to my teaching role, I am also the Head of PSHE and Prep supervisor – I enjoy being busy! Mayville is a special place. I work with visionary and supportive colleagues and the small class sizes allow me to get to know each pupil really well, enabling me to tailor my teaching to their individual needs.
Prior to joining Mayville, I had a variety of careers, including managing Pizza Express restaurants and the allocation department at Fat Face; childminding and helping to run my husband’s graphic design agency. As much as I enjoyed my previous jobs, they weren’t my passion, my calling so-to-speak. Teaching very much is. I consider it a privilege to work with such incredible pupils every day, encouraging them to explore and love the English language, as much as I do, and broadening their minds and horizons, in terms of understanding their place in the wider world.
When I am not at work, I enjoy reading, running, riding my bike and spending time with my family, including my three children and two grandchildren. I am a keen sports fan and also love to travel - Barcelona is my favourite city on the planet.

I am a Junior School teacher at Mayville and have been teaching here since 2009.
I completed my teaching degree at Chichester University, specialising in Primary Science and Education. Before joining Mayville, I taught in the state sector schools within the local area, across the whole of Key Stage 2.
I love the closeness and ethos of our school community, which allows teachers to know their pupils' individual needs and be able to nurture their full potential. I enjoy teaching junior pupils, as they have a great enthusiasm for learning and are always keen to discover more about themselves and the wider world.

After teaching art for more than 30 years, from Key Stage 3 through to GCSE in Art, Craft and Design, I still feel extremely proud of what students can achieve at school. With some post university pupils, I have been lucky to see their careers flourish in the art and creative world. As students gain achivements through their school life (and for those I am still in contact with), I see it continue through their work and personal lives. My biggest reward is knowing I have helped them on that path.
Originally trained in Textiles, Fashion and Pattern Cutting, I ultimately graduated at Kingston Upon Thames Polytechnic (now a University), with a Degree in Textiles/Fashion, enjoying work placements at Swanky Modes and Bata Shoes. Through winning a design brief, then completing my final year show, I was offered a job designing shoes for Clarkes in Somerset. I chose to stay in London and designed children's wear for Kate Greenaway. I then went onto fabric/garment design, launching the then childrenswear company Cotton Moon. Over the years, I worked freelance, in areas ranging from a commissioned hand-beaded 1920's wedding dress, to launching a line of equestrian jackets for the company Toggi.
The journey in art needs strong foundational support, encouraging the personal journey to experiment with materials, colour, texture, shape, pattern and form. These basic elements contribute significantly to the role that art plays in our lives, which arguably is even more important that it has ever been, reflected in how the value of creative content is growing. I see the value in understanding and utilising key art skills and techniques and translating them into our everyday lives. I hope to inspire my students to feel the same creative passion and fascination with Art and Creative Design, as a core life skill. Art is everywhere – you just have to look hard enough.
Besides working part-time at Mayville, I spend my time caring for my family and, more recently, joined a Millinery and Business Academy, designing and making hats, where every component is hand-sewn. I also have an affinity for all things mid-century modern, support the local Goodwood historic motor racing circuit/events and enjoy time with my hairless Sphynx cat, Pip.

What I love about working at Mayville is the sense of a close-knit community because of its size. When you start with new classes in September at Mayville, you already know the students – their strengths and needs, their personalities – and can really hit the ground running, to help them develop their full potential.
I did my undergraduate degree in English Literature and Language at Lincoln College, University of Oxford, where I acquired a chronological knowledge of the subject, from Beowulf to modern literary theory, specialising in the Romantics and 20th Century Modernism. I then did my PGCE at the University of Southampton in Secondary English. I also completed a part-time Postgraduate Certificate in Educational Research Methods, with the University of Winchester. I taught in three different schools before joining Mayville, in state and independent sectors, and have held a variety of roles in middle and senior leadership and am currently the Head of Department. Whatever role I have been in, teaching has always been my favourite part of my role.
As an English teacher, it is no surprise that I love books, and love sharing my passion with the pupils, but what I love most about my job is working with young people and seeing their confidence – in their written and spoken communication skills and their responses to works of literature – develop and grow.
Qualifications: MA (Oxon) | PGCE
My role is to pass on my passion for books and encourage our pupils to have a lifelong love of reading."
Mrs H Stallard, Librarian
I am the full-time school Librarian, managing the Junior and Senior libraries – running library sessions for pupils from Nursery to Year 9 (L4).
Over the past 15 years, I have run and managed several school libraries and have been seconded to two further schools, to aid with the set-up and organisation of their library. This role has, in the past, been carried out alongside other classrooms duties, such as one to one specialist educational support, PPA Cover and Higher Level teaching class support.
I hold a Level 3 in Early Years Education and started my career in private nursery education, before moving into primary Education and the librarian role. Over the past 2 years, I have also spent time gaining further knowledge and qualifications in Children’s and Young People’s Mental Health, Specific Learning Difficulties and Understanding Autism.
In 2018, I was awarded the ‘Inspiring Adult Award’ by Portsmouth School Library Service.
In my role as Librarian, I work closely with Portsmouth School Library Service, to bring authors and illustrators to Mayville, helping to inspire the next generation of writers.
Every pupil, from Nursery to Year 9, will spend time in the library on a weekly basis – choosing new books, exploring authors, genres and different styles of writing. Pupils are encouraged to read what they enjoy, what gives them pleasure and, most of all, what will make them want to read more!

I joined Mayville High School in 2014, as the Senior Practitioner in the Swans Class. I began my studies to become an Early Years Teacher in 2015, whilst working full-time across the Early Years Department. This gave me both practical experience and theoretical knowledge, to help children reach their full potential.
It is my belief that when children are respected and encouraged to explore, they flourish and learning happens naturally. I aim to build warm, supportive, and trusting relationships with the children, so each individual child feels confident to discover and learn whilst in our Nursery. I believe that children thrive on order and structure, I work carefully to plan and adapt the environment to promote learning, independence, and a natural desire to learn.
I am a big advocate for hands-on, messy and sensory play, so I enjoy trialling a range of activities at home with my young son. I also enjoy reading, so we spend lots of time reading a range of books together at home.

I love coming in every day, to engage with the children and inspire self-expression through dance, singing and movement, to help build their confidence."
Miss J Philpott, Swans & Kestrels
I am a honoured to be at Mayville, with a fabulous team throughout the school. I have over 25 years experience working in the Early Years sector, mostly in nurseries at independent schools. I’ve taught children at all ages within Early Years, producing plays and writing songs.
I aim to bring energy and excitement to the children’s day, by inspiring learning through activity. Over the last ten years, I developed a programme called Mini Movers – giving children the opportunity to dance to music, using a range of props and instruments, along with a variety of children’s songs – having fun and keeping fit.
Mini Movers gives the children the opportunity to experience music and dance from different cultures and different genres, while inspiring movement, with happiness as the key ingredient. I love creating my own lyrics for songs, that the children can follow and join-in with.
When the first lockdown was implemented in March 2020, I launched Mini Movers Online, to deliver dance and movement classes. These were aimed at getting nursery and reception aged children active via Facebook and YouTube. This grew to a Nationwide audience, raised money for charities, was recognised by the BBC and featured on ‘One World Together at Home’.
Following the success of Mini Movers, I combined football skills with fitness, to launch Mini Movers Active – giving younger children a fun way to stretch and keep fit every day, learning different ball skills and helping to develop their balance and coordination, whilst also building on team work.
My children come to Mayville and I have watched them grow and flourish during their time here. They are surrounded by lovely people and a caring, warm and nurturing environment, where a child’s own talents will be noticed and encouraged.
From a very young age, I’ve loved dancing. This passion has never left me and I’ve won awards in different competitions, but never quite made it to a world stage with Lady Gaga! But, I love coming in every day, to engage with the children and inspire self-expression through dance, singing and movement, to help build their confidence.
I enjoy country walks and keep-fit and, when I have a quiet moment to myself, I love to watch the old time greats of the movie world: Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Judy Garland and many more. But, the best days are spent with my family, just being together.
Qualifications: Foundation Degree FdA in Early Years Childcare and Education.

Miss J Philpott, Swans & Kestrels
I am a honoured to be at Mayville, with a fabulous team throughout the school. I have over 25 years experience working in the Early Years sector and for nearly 20 years in nurseries at independent schools.
My two children come to Mayville and I have watched them grow and flourish during their time here. They are surrounded by lovely people and a caring, warm and nurturing environment, where a child’s own talents will be noticed and encouraged.

I bring a wealth of experience to Mayville, having previously worked in an educational setting for over 22 years. No two days are the same, which brings variety and enjoyment to a busy role. Seeing pupils grow, develop and achieve from starting out in our Nursery then into the young adults we see leaving at the end of Year 11 (U5). This gives me a great sense of pride in working with a great team of people.
I started at Mayville in August 2016 and changed my role in 2018, when I became the PA to the Headteacher. I am responsible for managing the office, staff recruitment and I am also the Examinations Officer.
Before joining Mayville, I worked for over 18 years at South Downs College, as the Customer Service Manager and Careers Manager. Working at the college, I was able to develop my skills by taking advantage of the many courses that were on offer, varying from an Fda Degree in Business Studies to a Level 1 in British Sign Language.
I have four children, who have since left home, all with families of their own and I have two fabulous grandchildren. My hobbies include art and crafts and hair and beauty, as I previously trained in Hairdressing and Beauty.
